Moises Quispé has heard the whispered rumours about the Black Butterfly – its hypnotic, velvet wings, two feet across and as dark and mystical as the Peruvian jungle night; a jungle receding to a soundtrack of chainsaws and hate; a jungle that gave him life and embraces the spirit of his murdered family.
So he searches.
Not because of the one million nuevo sol offered for its capture by the maniacal Mr Dollie, or because his mentor – who believes the rumours to be true – has disappeared so completely, but because he must.
Perhaps the Black Butterfly has been searching for him too, desperate to reveal the tight, elegant writing imbedded in its wings. Its stories. Tall, dark and cautionary tales of a doomed humanity that he alone can read. And when the butterfly finally submits, the danger that Moises finds himself in pales into insignificance against the fate of humanity itself.
The Black Butterfly has chosen him to deliver its message and the future of mankind is in his hands.
Man’s imagination will be nature’s revenge

I have to say, I've never read a book of this caliber before. The Dreams of The Black Butterfly is the first book that had me running in circles in a never ending maze filled with mystery. I'm usually able to figure out the plot of a story part way in to reading it. This thriller had so many loopholes, and twists that it threw me for a loop. It kept my attention easily, as I tried to figure out my own take on what I felt was happening. What I found most intriguing about the book, was that it seemed every chapter was a story onto itself, creating short snippets to make up a whole grand, and detailed masterpiece. I found the way the Author illustrated each scene to be enticing, and couldn't put the book down. (I recommend reading as efficiently as possible. Each story has a vast amount of information) I hadn't been that engaged in a book since, "The Dark Tower" by: Stephen King. I recommend that you soak in each page. I'm an avid reader, and constantly look for clues, however subtle they may seem in any novel. The Author Mark Barrett, understands how to forge an in-depth story, with several layers of different genre's fastened within the story.
Moises Quispie a man destined to witness the velvet wings of the Black Butterfly (a bizarre, mystical butterfly that has stories written on their wings that are dark, and captivating ). Without giving too much away, we find that Moises is unique, in that he can read the stories upon the wings of the alluring Black butterfly. Each chapter tells a portion of the fluttering wings, and mirror images of a world that has come to be.
If you are looking for an unorthodox read, I recommend this suspenseful thriller. It's not everyday you get a look into such an incredible, enriching, and dark story. 5 stars!

The Dreams of the Black Butterfly edition by Mark James Barrett Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
When I first finished this book (and to be honest, sometimes during reading it) I was left with the feeling of “Did I just read that?” “What just happened to my mind for the hours and days it took to read this?”
This is probably going to be hard to review, as I’m not sure I’ve fully got my head around this fascinating and creative novel. It’s not often I say this, but I honestly feel the desire to read it again. To make better sense of some of it. To make sure I understood it correctly. Probably the last time I felt like this was when I studied philosophy as part of my university degree in the 1990s. I loved philosophy, but couldn’t always make full sense of it. This novel is a little like that. Not in a bad way, but some parts are so surreal, it challenges a mind that has learnt to see things in a certain way.
Each chapter appears almost as a separate short story, but each story connects with the others in some way, creating a somewhat unusual, visually descriptive and very intriguing plot.
This is in no way a book that can be rushed. As a reader, you need to enter this book with an open mind. Absorb each story. Fully experience it for what it is. Allow yourself to become a part of the often dark and sometimes brutal world created within these pages.
The Dreams of the Black Butterfly is not only thought provoking, but a work of art that touched my soul. Filling my heart with emotion and my mind with so many thoughts and questions, I didn’t know what to do with them all.
I’m not sure what genre to place this book under, as it covers so many, such as literary fiction, historical, science fiction, fantasy, spiritual, thriller, and romance. It would seem that this story has as many different aspects to it, as the Black Butterfly has stories on its wings!
This isn’t a book for everyone. Some, I imagine, will be completely baffled by it, while others will soak up the pages with eagerness, as I did. You will question the way you treat the planet you inhabit, as well as the plants, animals and people you live alongside, and the impact that may have on your future. If you like a novel that challenges the way you think, has a philosophical, ethical and spiritual element to it, then this is definitely a book you do not want to miss!
I would like to thank the publisher, Troubador Publishing Ltd. for allowing me a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed this book so much, I have bought a paperback copy for my own book collection.
This book is a dark fantasy, written in direct imitation of Bradbury's The Illustrated Man. Instead of a tattooed workman we have a black butterfly in the Peruvian rainforest, stories etched upon the microscopic wing scales. The short stories are read by a young man named Moises (who is abused by a traveller from Britain). For a superstitious native he oddly does the opposite of what we'd expect; the butterfly lures him out of his hide and a tree collapses onto the hide. He still kills the butterfly.
In Illustrated Man mode again, we read each unrelated short (and get a brief mention of a black butterfly in each) with a reminder between them that Moises is reading; then that's left out just as in Bradbury's work. Some of the tales are nicer, like one about the folks from a Chagall painting. Others throw every SF trait in confusingly, like a Philip K Dick tale. By the time we meet Moises again we're pretty sure the world is going to hell in a handbasket.
I don't enjoy horror and darkness, so when I see an author describe scents as sweet but he's talking about the stench of human ordure or rotting meat, I'm out of there. Other readers will doubtless enjoy this more than I did. I appreciate the underlying message that mass humanity and its destruction of the biosphere is harming the entire world - but saying biodiversity is our soul is not going to persuade the illegal loggers. Better to say we are all interdependent. The ecology message has to be spread so maybe this book will reach different readers. And to be fair, there is plenty of unhappy non-fiction reading in this field.
This is an adult read due to violence, death, strong language and sexual abuse.
I took advantage of a free download copy. This is an unbiased review.
