The Watcher and Other Weird Stories includes these tales:- The Watcher;
- Passage in the Secret History of an Irish Countess;
- Schalken the Painter;
- The Fortunes of Sir Robert Ardagh;
- The Dream; and
- A Chapter in the History of the Tyrone Family.
The volume also includes a brief preface by Brinsley Le Fanu, the author's son, as well as the historical curio of (at the end of the volume) the contemporary publisher's advertisements for other books of the era (circa 1894).
All of these are fine old-fashioned ghost stories, or tales of the uncanny, if you prefer. Of them, probably the best-known is the disturbing "Schalken the Painter." This last, incidentally, likely inspired American author H.P. Lovecraft to write his tale of "Pickman's Model."

The watcher is a very creepy read. It reminds me a bit of "Drag me to Hell" and "Casting the Runes"
Good old fashioned creepy stories!
Beautifully written, with a style reminiscent of James Hogg. If only there were better resolution for some of the stories, it would be perfect. As such it's a good rainy day read.
